Witchblades marks the intersection of horror and humor. Death in the news and in the streets. Murder podcasts to wind down. Dark memes make us laugh. The line between leisure and our worst nightmares continues to blur.
The title of Witchblades is drawn from a Lil Peep and Lil Tracy song from Castles II (mixtapes that premiered on SoundCloud), both of whom collaborated often before Peep’s passing in 2017. As members of the collective, GothBoiClique, they rifted from different genres such as emo, goth, punk, metal, horror, and hip-hop, creating the music-genre bending “emo rap.” Similarly, the work in Witchblades references multiple subcultures, highlighting convergences amongst them which suggest how varied their visual symbols can be and how complicated it can be to interpret them.
