Works by Noelle Africh, Shea Burke and Thuong Tran. Co-Curated by Siena Smith and Brian Jucas

In ecology, the term niche partitioning describes how competing species become hyper-specialized in an attempt to co-exist in an environment with scarce resources. With the viewer’s attention being a resource and identity acting as a form of hyper-specialization, how can artwork focused on identity co-exist in a society structured in a patriarchal hierarchy based on competition? In Niche Partitioning, Shae Burke, Noelle Africh and Thuong Tran process identity through their work as it relates to race, gender, and movement. These works of portraiture, sculpture, print media, painting and drawing demonstrate that coexistence can act as a more powerful force than competition.
